The Statement
About ten years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of going to college with Ariel and Maia. Ariel intimidated me with her savvy intelligence. Maia intimidated me…well…because she’s Maia. One summer, we spent our last month of freedom in eight-hour long rehearsals, six days a week creating a Commedia del Arte show called Nights of Carnival. It was a profound and thrilling experience for all of us. The highly physical nature of these rehearsals combined with an unconventional (to say the least!) approach to ensemble development blew open our expectations of what “a rehearsal” is and what creating new work can mean. I believe the seeds for OOH were planted during this time.
It wasn’t until several years later, though, that OOH was actually formed. I wasn’t around then. I’m not sure where I was or what the hell I was doing, but it pisses me off they became so damn good without me.
My absolute favorite OOH show is the next one!
