Equitable Dinners combines art, information, and conversation to create positive action in our communities.

Equitable Dinners Programs

Equitable Dinners Atlanta gathers thousands of people every September for facilitated, small-group conversations about racial equity and other equity topics over a meal in homes, community centers, houses of worship, and online, each launched by a short play. Equitable Dinners is a partnership between Out of Hand and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Mayor's Office, The King Center, Fulton County Remembrance Coalition, Partnership for Southern Equity, and Atlanta Public Schools, among others. Equitable Dinners Atlanta marks the anniversary of the Atlanta Race Massacre, addressing the history of racial violence, its legacy on the present, and how to move forward to a better future.

Equitable Dinners at Work combines art, information, and small-group conversation to give employers the tools to work effectively in teams, build meaningful relationships, and navigate a rapidly changing landscape.

Out of Hand Theater offers custom Equitable Dinners at Work on a variety of topics. These Dinners support our clients’ needs by providing meaningful opportunities for empathy and engagement with the experiences of people of diverse identities and backgrounds. In addition, they increase ease in naming and discussing equity, diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace, as well as giving leaders the tools to to manage successful collaborations and more effective communication.

Thriving Together Atlanta is a Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge winner and is a collaboration between the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the CDC Foundation, National Black Arts Festival, and Out of Hand.

Over the nest two years, Thriving Together Atlanta will include Equitable Dinners experiences, a mobile art gallery, murals created by Atlanta artists, and and arts cultural festival, all centered around racial equity and how it impacts health outcomes.

It all started when…

A Decatur Mom wanted to do something to end the disparities between students of color and their white peers in Decatur City Schools. Students of color were being disproportionately disciplined, faced opportunity gaps white students did not, and were falling behind academically in a community that prides itself on its progressive values. She connected with Out of Hand and One Small Change/Both And.

Over nine months, Out of Hand and One Small Change/Both And partnered with the City of Decatur’s Better Together Board, City of Decatur Schools, Decatur Housing Authority to create Decatur Dinners. On August 25, 1,200 people gathered throughout Decatur to share a meal and have a facilitated conversation about race and equity in their community. The evening was launched by a one-person play commissioned specifically for the event.

We received National Media Coverage…

Decatur Dinners received local and national press coverage on outlets including All Things Considered on NPR, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and CBS 46. Since then, communities from around the country have reached out to bring the Decatur Dinners model, now called Equitable Dinners, to their city.
